چکیده

So far, Brillouin scattering based sensors have been studied as promising technology for a distributed temperature or strain measurement in structural health monitoring [1-10]. Intrinsically, Brillouin scattering is an effect caused by acoustic vibrations in the medium when laser light travels in a medium such as an optical fiber. Since the sound wave is traveling, light is also subjected to a Doppler shift, so its frequency changes. The Brillouin frequency shift ν B can be calculated from the effective refractive index of the propagating media n, the acoustic velocity Va, and the wavelength of the incident light λ :

High-resolution long-reach distributed Brillouin sensing based on combined time-domain and correlation-domain analysis.

A new scheme for distributed Brillouin sensing of strain and temperature in optical fibers is proposed, analyzed and demonstrated experimentally. The technique combines between time-domain and correlation-domain analysis. Both Brillouin pump and signal waves are repeatedly co-modulated by a relatively short, high-rate phase sequence, which introduces Brillouin interactions in a large number of ...

Measurement range enlargement in Brillouin optical correlation-domain reflectometry based on double-modulation scheme.

We have demonstrated a double-modulation scheme to enlarge the measurement range of Brillouin optical correlation-domain reflectometry for fiber-optic distributed strain sensing. In this scheme, the frequency of the laser output is simultaneously modulated with two different frequencies. In the experiment, 53-cm resolution and 1.5-km measurement range were simultaneously obtained. Furthermore, ...

High-resolution Brillouin optical correlation domain analysis with no spectral scanning.

Distributed Brillouin fiber sensors typically rely on the reconstruction of the steady-state Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS), through spectral scanning of the frequency offset between the pump and signal waves. In this work, we propose and demonstrate an alternative approach, in which the local Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) is extracted from temporal transient analysis of the step response of t...

Double-pulse pair Brillouin optical correlation-domain analysis.

Brillouin optical correlation-domain analysis (B-OCDA) allows for distributed measurements of strain and temperature with sub-cm resolution. Time-multiplexing techniques have previously extended B-OCDA to the monitoring of many km of fiber and two million resolution points. Thus far, however, the number of scans of correlation peaks positions, necessary to cover the fiber under test, was restri...

High-resolution long-range distributed Brillouin analysis using dual-layer phase and amplitude coding.

A new, hybrid time-domain and correlation-domain Brillouin analysis technique is proposed and demonstrated, providing a large number of high-resolution acquisition points. The method is based on dual-layer hierarchal encoding of both amplitude and phase. The pump and signal waves are co-modulated by a relatively short, high-rate binary phase sequence. The phase modulation introduces Brillouin i...
